On October 21, 2009, ELCO HS students and staff members participated in the History Channel's National Teach-In at the Library of Congress in Washington D. C. The Teach-In was the culmination of the cross-curricular activities completed by the ELCO students. The project highlighted Mr. Jon Bickel, high school English teacher, who was the catalyst for getting this project off the ground. Mr. Bob Patrick, director of VHP, was so impressed with the students' work that he invited Mr. Bickel to be on the panel that discussed the project requirements.
The panel featured other experts on veteran affairs also. The show was broadcast to over 1,000 school districts across the U.S. Questions included topics how to get started, how to find veterans to interview, and how important this activity is the veterans.
The Elco students were recognized for their active participation and thoroughness in completing the interviews, the transcripts, and the unique programs the designed to honor the veterans.
On Wed., Oct 21, 2009 the students involved in this project along with 9 veterans and 4 teachers were invited to participate in this program in Washington, D.C. at the Library of Congress. Mr. Jon Bickel served on the panel of distinguished guests and over 2000 schools across the national participated via video conferencing.
